The Noble, Ameer Ul Momineen Omar bin Khattab Radiyallahu anhu, one night was in his office and working. One of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)came to visit and greeted Omar (RA) by saying “Hello!” but he did not get a response and so decided to sit down, as Omar (RA) was busy with his work.
The Companion waited whilst Omar (RA) was working, to the extent that he got no response and Ameer Ul Momineen didn’t even glance to take a look at him.
When Omar (RA) completed his work, he (RA) proceeded to extinguish the flame of the candle that was being used to light the office. He then lit another candle and acknowledged the Companion and began to converse with him.
The Companion asked:
– “Omar, why didn’t you acknowledge or respond to me when I called you and why did you extinguish one candle and lit another before you started talking to me?
The Noble, Ameer Ul Momineen Omar bin Khattab Radiyallahu anhu replied:
– “The first candle is the property of the state and the treasury. If I use state property whilst conducting my private and personal affairs then, I would be judged by Allah. When I had completed my state responsibility, I extinguished the state candle and lit my own candle which I took out of my pocket, because we would betalking about our personal matters and not state matters.
The eyes of the Companion filled up with tears, and he raised his hands and prayed:
-My Allah! Do not take the son of the Woodcutter, Omar from us!
